Different anatomical problems
Bone grafting is a broad term for procedures that preserve or rebuild jaw bone. A sinus lift is a specific type of grafting in the upper back jaw, where space is created beneath the sinus membrane.
Planning the procedure
Clinical examination and CBCT imaging help identify the defect. A narrow ridge may need width augmentation; a low sinus floor may need sinus augmentation. Some implants can be placed with the graft, while other cases need staged healing.
Materials and consent
Graft materials may be autogenous, donor-derived, animal-derived or synthetic. Patients should be told what is proposed, why it is suitable, the alternatives, expected healing and material traceability.
Risks and follow-up
Infection, graft exposure or loss, membrane perforation and delayed healing are possible. Smoking and poor plaque control can impair healing. Written instructions and a clear review pathway are essential.
